How to choose your first pair of binoculars

A quick guide to help you make the right choice

Step 1

Which Magnification

10x42: Offers a magnification of 10 times, providing a closer view of distant objects. Ideal for activities like birdwatching or wildlife observation where detail is important. 8x32: Offers a magnification of 8 times, which will provide a wider field of view. Suitable for general use, such as hiking or sports events, where a broad view is beneficial.

Step 2

Objective Lens Diameter

10x42: The larger objective lens (42mm) allows more light to enter, making it better for low-light conditions but slightly heavier. 8x32: The smaller objective lens (32mm) makes these binoculars lighter and more portable, but less effective in dim lighting but provides a wider viewing experience and are better for tracking fast moving nature or objects.

Step 3

Weight and Size

10x42: Is generally heavier due to larger lenses, which might be a consideration if carrying them for extended periods. 8x32: Are more compact, lighter and easier to carry, offering more convenience during travel or long hikes. Higher spec components such as Extra Low Dispersion Glass (ED) will add to the weight but give a sharper and brighter image.

Step 4

Field of View (FOV)

The FOV is the width of the image you will see. The higher the magnification the narrower this will be. 10x42: Typically has a narrower field of view, focusing more on specific details or object but potentially missing surroundings. 8x32: Usually offers a wider field of view, which is advantageous for scanning areas or observing fast moving targets.

Step 5

How they feel (Ergonomics)

It's crucial for binoculars to feature excellent weight balance that rests naturally in your hands to minimise arm strain. Contoured rubber armour for a secure, non-slip, and comfortable grip, and a smooth precise focus wheel are all important factors to allow you to observe longer, steadier, and with greater focus.
